ESET Update Boosts Engine Scanning Speed
ESET has increased the speed of its scanning engine by 30% on average. With the signature update 5187, many processes have been optimized for even higher performance.
For illustration, the scanning speed of executable (.exe) files has improved by more than 50%. This update affects all products in the ESET product line (excluding ESET Mobile Antivirus), confirming ESET in the forefront of the industry in speed and detection accuracy.
“The increase in speed means that when previously the scanning took four to five minutes, now it can be, in many cases, completed under a minute. Emphasizing lightweight, yet powerful design coupled with fast scanning speed has always been our top priority,” said Peter Košinár, Senior Developer, Technology and Research Division at ESET’s global headquarters in Bratislava, Slovakia.
The update of ESET’s flagship security solutions - ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 and ESET Smart Security - brings these benefits:
- Increase of file scanning speed by 29 percent
- Increase on system start and restart by 53 percent
- Increase of web download speed by 46 percent

Public Beta 2 has been released for ESET NOD32 Antivirus for Mac and ESET NOD32 Antivirus for Linux. Build 4.0.26 includes repairs to known issues that have been found in recent months, as well as improved features and functionality.
Key new features include:

- Added client support for ESET Remote Administrator and interactive tasks
- Quarantined files can now be restored to a specific location with the "restore to" button
- Quarantine folder is now scanned after every update
- Silent mode and fullscreen mode have been added

ESET Authentication Server v1.0.19.0 has been released in Czech, English and Slovak for use by licensed users of ESET Smart Security v4.2.
ESET Authentication Server allows portable computers running ESET Smart Security v4.2 to verify which network they are connected to by the use of strong encryption or by adopting a configuration from the local network. When a computer running ESET Smart Security connects to a new network, authentication ensures a secure network connection.

Microsoft has notified software vendors that a hotfix is now available for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 R2 to resolve a memory leak in Windows Filtering Platform (WFP). WFP is a technology Microsoft provides to developers of network, security and utility software for monitoring network traffic.
Some customers using ESET Smart Security on Windows 7 or Server 2008 R2 may see an increase in program memory usage over time resulting in decreased system performance. The impact of this issue on clients is difficult to determine because it is based on the type and amount of network traffic performed, which varies from customer to customer.
A detailed description of the problem, along with instructions on how to obtain the hotfix, can be found in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article #979223, "A nonpaged pool memory leak occurs when you use a WFP callout driver in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2." (NOTE: The hotfix can be requested from this page on Microsoft’s web site. Select "Show hotfixes for all platforms and languages" on the web page to view which platforms the hotfix is available for and to select them.)
ESET recommends customers request this hotfix from Microsoft and deploy it as soon as possible after verifying compatibility with their operating environments.

ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server Release Candidate is now available for testing. This release brings the product one step closer to general availability and includes repairs to known issues that have been found in recent months, as well as improved features and functionality.

End of Life announcement for NOD32 v2.7. Current NOD32 Antivirus 2.7 customers can upgrade to ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for free. ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 offers the most current proactive protection technology, is easier to use and has more advanced options for power users. NOD32 Antvirus 2.7 customers will continue to be protected with signature updates until February 1, 2012, but are advised to upgrade to the latest version as soon as possible.

Microsoft has notified software developers that some of the technologies used by security, backup, disk utility and network management programs are incompatible with the Windows Vista to Windows 7 upgrade process. This is a direct result of Microsoft’s design decisions and impacts most antivirus solutions that scan network data.
ESET has verified that the Personal firewall module in both versions 3 and 4 of ESET Smart Security is affected. The problem only affects computers being upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows Vista SP1 and SP2. Customers working with new installations of Windows 7 will not experience these problems, nor will customers upgrading from Windows XP (which performs a clean install).
ESET NOD32 Antivirus is not affected.
ESET is working closely with Microsoft as we approach the official launch of Windows 7 to address any potential compatibility issues and promptly communicate issues like this to our valued partners. Further information is available at http://www.eset.ie/windows7.

Despite the difference in build numbers, the only changes in these releases are localization of the user interface and online help. They all have the same functionality and feature set of v4.0.437.0. Testing of the new Anti-Stealth module to improve compatibility between ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus v4.0 and Microsoft Windows Vista / Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 has successfully completed and distribution has begun. The updated module will be downloaded automatically when a virus signature database update occurs in ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus.
After the update is downloaded, the entry for the Anti-Stealth module in the About window for ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus v4 will appear as Anti-Stealth support module: 1012 (20090526)
If Anti-Stealth was disabled as a temporary workaround, re-enable it by opening the ESET Graphic User Interface, pressing the F5 key to open the Advanced Setup window, selecting Antivirus and Antispyware in the left navigation pane and enabling (checking) the Enable Anti-Stealth Technology option in the right pane.

ESET Mobile Antivirus 1.2.200905260952.1.2 has been released in English (ENU) and Slovak (SKY). ESET Mobile Antivirus has a feature set similar to ESET NOD32 Antivirus, with features such as on-access protection and the ability to run on-demand scans. It also provides antispam for SMS messages.

An updated Anti-Stealth module (v1012, build date 20090526) is now available for testing purposes. To obtain it, open the ESET user interface, press the F5 key to open the Advanced Settings window, select Update in the left pane, then Advanced Update Setup in the right pane and check Enable Test Mode at the bottom of the window.
The next time the client performs an virus signature database update, it will also download the updated Anti-Stealth module.
If you are running ESET Smart Security, an updated Firewall module (v1047, build date 20090525) containing unrelated updates and fixes will also be downloaded for testing

ESET Server Security v3.0.13 for BSD, Linux and Solaris has been released. This release contains three components:
ESET File Security - protects file servers from malware (formerly known as NOD32 for Linux File Servers)
ESET Mail Security - protects mail servers from malware (formerly known as NOD32 for Linux Mail Servers)
ESET Gateway Security - checks http and ftp streams for malware
One binary file will perform any combination of these features based on appropriate licensing. All programs have a web interface for management and can be managed with ESET Remote Administrator v3.x.

On Sunday, March 8th at 9:52PM PDT, ESET released an update of our heuristics module, v1091, together with standard virus signature database update number 3918. Unfortunately, an error in the heuristics module, coupled with the specific virus signature database update, caused ESET to incorrectly identify several Windows operating system files, including dllhost.exe and msdtc.exe, as being infected with Win32/Kryptik.JX.
Details:
- Some Windows files were flagged as infected.
- If the computer is not restarted once files are moved to quarantine then on the next update (virus signature database 3919) the changes to the module will be reverted and the computer will run fine.
- Virus signature database 3920 and later tell ESET v3 and v4 products to automatically restore the false positives from quarantine.
- For NOD32 v2.7, the false positive has to be removed manually, following the instructions in the Knowledgebase article, below.
- An error in synchronization during quality control resulted in a failure to properly test the new heuristic module with the new signature file prior to release. Process changes have been made to prevent this mistake from being repeated.
The update downloads were stopped within ten minutes of the update release, and the update was reverted to its previous version. Due to this immediate response, less than 5% of our users were affected.
Virus signature database update number 3919, was released at 1:00AM PDT (March 9th) which corrects the problem. We have released a knowledge base article describing this issue, which can be found http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2181.
We take quality control very seriously, and we sincerely apologize for any problems caused by this issue.

Dear ESET Customers: Unfortunately, virus signature update 3901 caused some installations of ESET Smart Security/ESET NOD32 Antivirus 3.x and 4.x to behave abnormally for a small number of users. Symptoms include the errors “unable to load firewall rules” or “firewall failed to start”.
To address these errors, please uninstall and reinstall your ESET software.
If a blue screen is displayed, boot your computer into Safe mode, uninstall your ESET software, and reinstall. For step-by-step instructions, see the following Knowledgebase article:
